Original Christmas Cards
A Great Gift Idea!

Give a gift that makes a difference to a boy at Boys’ Home.
We are offering a special Christmas greeting card drawn by Stephen, a resident of Jack Gordon cottage.

When printed, the original artwork is in full color and features a fireplace with stockings hung and a little gift for Spot, the dog. The card was selected during the Christmas card contest.

A Boys’ Home Christmas card is a wonderful way to honor someone special or memorialize a loved one. With each $10 (minimum), one Christmas card with envelope will be mailed to you to personalize and give when you wish. The inside of the card reads, "This Holiday season, a gift to Boys’ Home has been made in your honor." Memorial cards are also available. To order, just return the form above with the total number of cards wanted and specify either honor or memorial cards. This is a good "gift" for everyone on your list!

Neighborhood Assistance Program

Changes in the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Neighborhood Assistance Program began July 1, 2007. Individuals that donate to charities may use both the charitable donation on their federal tax return and the NAP credit on their state taxes. The tax credit will be 40% of the donation value.

To take part in this program, donations from individuals, businesses and professionals must be made directly to Boys’ Home and be unrestricted.

Donors are encouraged to seek advice from their tax advisor. A NAP Contribution Notification Form (CNF) must be jointly prepared by the donor and Boys’ Home for submission to the Virginia Department of Social Service. The NAP office will forward a tax credit certificate to the donor. The process generally requires 4-6 weeks before the donor receives the certificate.

The program operates on a fiscal year of July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. If you have any questions, please call Boys’ Home at 540-965-7714 or check with your tax advisor.

Soup labels needed
The Campbell’s Soup Labels for Education campaign continues. The labels are redeemed for equipment and supplies for the Boys’ Home School at the Greer Education Center. Several churches, groups and individuals have been collecting labels since the program began at Boys’ Home. In 2002, a 15-passenger van was obtained through the program.

Besides Campbell’s products, proofs of purchase from Prego, Pepperidge Farms, Franco-American and V-8 Juices are accepted.

Please call Martha at (540) 965-7707 for more information.

Planned Giving
Planning for the Spreading Chestnut Tree
By Janet D. Lemmer
Josh is searching for the perfect plot of land to plant and nurture 25 chestnut seedlings. He hopes to transplant the survivors to selected locations in a few years. His interest in the chestnut tree was sparked by his high school teacher, and my interest comes from my father’s love of the woods.

I haven’t thought about chestnut tress for a long time. I remember memorizing a poem in the seventh grade that began "under a spreading chestnut tree the village smithy stands ..." This stanza is difficult to understand now since most of the chestnut trees are gone, and so are the blacksmiths.

The Boys’ Home campus today is framed with stately oaks and sheltered by lofty evergreens. Chestnut trees aren’t very popular because they take so long to mature. The chestnut tree is not a tree for a decade – its towering trunk takes a generation of patience for the foliage to spread. Josh, who is 17, may see the chestnuts mature from these trees, but more likely will not. Yet the lesson in the chestnut tree is just that – we must plan even for those harvests we will never see.

In our hurried pace it is sometimes hard to find time to do everything. Thankfully, there are still people like you who have a vision, plan carefully, and feel responsibility for the future. As the new century begins, Josh will plant the seedlings and I will watch with interest. And a hundred years from now, maybe children will gather at Boys’ Home "under a spreading chestnut tree" to play.

As we look to our future, we know you are planning for yours. Please include Boys’ Home in your plans. For more information on estate planning and planned gift opportunities, please contact Janet Lemmer (540) 965-7715.

The Bishop Jett Fund
The Bishop Jett Fund was named in honor of the first Bishop on the Boys’ Home Board of Trustees. It has been established to meet the expenses of the religious life program of Boys’ Home. A goal of $2 million is being sought for this Fund.

The Religious Life Program will continue to be one of the four cornerstones that define the Boys’ Home mission. We are an outreach of the Episcopal Church and believe that religion helps shape all aspects of a person's life.

This Fund will help finance the Boys’ Home Chaplain’s position. The Chaplain's residence can be renovated. Additionally, the fund will provide for the maintenance and upkeep of All Saints' Chapel on our campus.

The Fund will help support activities in our Religious Life Program: worship resources, religious education materials, church camps and conferences, Boys' Home Singers, youth group activities and religious awards for Boy Scout Troop # 66.

A beautiful Tree of Life has been placed in the lobby of the Administration Building at Boys' Home. This solid oak tree provides a way to recognize the generous donors who support the Bishop Jett Fund at Boys' Home.

Boys' Home, Inc. is a residential education facility for boys ages 6 - 18. Since its founding in 1906 by the Rev. G. Floyd Rogers, thousands of boys' lives have been changed. At our heart is a mission to help each boy strive to develop his spiritual, mental, physical and social potentials. Thereby, ultimately becoming a healthy, productive and giving member of society. It is a big challenge to accept, but it's one we've been successful in accomplishing at Boys' Home.

The main campus of Boys' Home is located two and one-half miles west of Covington, Virginia. The campus consists of 70 developed acres, along with 1,400 mountainous acres of woods, streams and cliffs where the boys can hike, fish and swim.
