After nearly one hundred years, Boys’ Home once again is examining its mission, looking at its programs, and positioning itself to better meet its second century of service. The majority of the boys who are accepted for residency at Boys’ Home come with a poor foundation in school performance. The causes vary from poor school attendance to medical explanations. Studies indicate a need for on-campus schooling to help residents "catch up" before placing them in public schools. One can imagine the enormous discouragement for a boy in a situation where he is years behind his peers. The Greer Education Center will be a multiple use building located near the entrance of our campus. The two-story building will include a computer lab, general classrooms, a library, a counseling office, and a multi-purpose room as well as activity rooms. The cost estimate for the center is $1,200,000 for the building and another $150,000 for the furnishings. The Grigsby Building, which currently serves as the maintenance shops for Boys’ Home, is being renovated to serve as the Evans Vocational/Technical Labs. Both floors are being adapted for teaching purposes and additional space is being added for both exploratory and formal instruction. Cost estimates for the Grigsby Building is $600,000 for the renovation, furnishings, and equipment. On October 14, 1999, we broke ground on the Greer Education Center and the Grigsby Building. In 1996, we commissioned Anderson and Associates, Inc. of Blacksburg, Va. to complete a site plan and examine our utilities. We entered the design phase with Architectural Alternatives, also of Blacksburg, in November of 1998. The Greer Educational Center will include over 8000 square foot of new construction. The Grigsby Building portions of this project will double the size of our existing 4000 square foot maintenance facility. We expect to complete the project by October 1, 2000. During early August 2000, we began excavation on the Evaluation and Emergency Care Center. The EEC will expand our Child Study capacity to ten residents and provide a facility for emergency placement. Thor, Inc. of Roanoke, Va. was chosen as the General Contractor. Both buildings will feature ground source heat pumps as the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Varney Electric of Roanoke, Va. is the mechanical-electrical subcontractor. The ground source heat pumps will require 24 wells at the Greer Education Center and 12 additional at the Grigsby Building. Richard Simmons Well Drilling of Buchanan, Va. has been subcontracted to drill all 36 wells. An additional $200,000 will be committed for the geothermal wells and the necessary extension of our utilities. |
